After your appointment, you are presented with two options for healing. The first option is to use saniderm/second-skin (clear tattoo bandage/film) or to heal it with no saniderm. Please refer to either sections With Saniderm or Traditional Healing for your respective care instructions.
With Saniderm
1. Leave saniderm on for 3-5 days. If saniderm fills with fluid or leaks, you may remove the saniderm, wash it with cold/warm water and fragrance free soap, and replace the bandage to a new saniderm bandage.
2. After 3-5 days, take the film off under running water (in the shower preferably). Wash your tattoo with fragrance free soap.
3. Pat the tattoo dry and apply any unscented or fragrance free lotion or moisturizer at least 3 times a day to keep the tattoo dry. If you aren't sure what moisturizers you can use, here are a list of suggestions.
Recommended Moisturizers:
Shea butter (Ex. Shea Radiance Shea Butter)
Tattoo balms (Ex. Hustle butter, Tattoo Goo, etc.)
Coconut Oil
Cocoa Butter
Aloe Vera Gel
Any fragrance free lotion (Ex. Cerave, Cetaphil, Aveeno, etc.)
AVOID for 2 weeks:
Seafood, especially shellfish. Fish may be acceptable, but stop consuming if tattoo becomes bumpy or irritated.
AFTER FILM IS REMOVED: Taking hot showers. Cold and warm water showers only. Turn the water down if there is steam coming from your shower.
Submerging or soaking your tattoo. THEREFORE, beach, sauna, bath, swimming is not allowed for at least 2 weeks!!! Showers and running water are ok.
Heavy workouts, especially workouts that will involve moving the area the t attoo is on a lot. Excessive stretching of the skin there may negatively affect healing.
Sweating over your tattoo. If you are sweating too much on your tattoo, please wash and dry your tattoo at the soonest convenience to keep it clean. Sweat harbors bacteria and tattoos also heal poorly in damp environments.
AFTER FILM IS REMOVED: Re-covering the tattoo. Do not rebandage the tattoo or cover it with anything after the initial wrap or bandage is removed in the beginning. Covering with loose clothing is acceptable, but not with clothes that hug or squeeze the area.
Direct UV/sun exposure for long periods of time. UV rays cause tattoo inks to fade. Please also avoid tanning of any kind during the healing process.
AFTER FILM IS REMOVED: Clothing that is too tight. This does not allow the tattoo to breathe properly. It needs air to heal effectively.
AFTER FILM IS REMOVED: Scratching or picking at the tattoo. Peeling and scabbing is a normal process in tattooing as well as itching. Don't be alarmed! Just make sure not to scratch or pick at it. If you need to relieve the itch you may slap or tap the tattoo.
AFTER FILM IS REMOVED: Contact with pet hair on tattooed area. This may cause irritation or allergic reaction on your tattoo.
Traditional Healing
After the session, keep the bandage or wrap on the tattoo for:
Black/Grey work (lineart/shading) or any small tattoos (3 inches and under): 1-2 hrs
Color & work with heavy black fill: 2-4 hrs
Take the bandage or wrap off after this time and wash the tattoo in cold or warm water with fragrance free soap. NO HOT WATER.
Wash your tattoo at least once a day with cold or warm water and fragrance free soap. No hot water.
Every day after your tattoo session for about two to four weeks, you should apply an unscented ointment or lotion to the tattoo, three times a day. Apply the ointment or lotion until fully healed.
First time - In the morning when waking up
Second time - After shower
Third Time - Before bed
* If you shower right when you wake up or right before bed, please wait until after the shower to apply the ointment. The second application of the ointment will then be rather around lunch time (or middle of your day) instead.
